Genocide, suicide, and pregnancy are all major events within the game’s story, and it deals with heavy themes of shared trauma and having to move on from tragedy. Each of the fourteen playable characters, regardless of how fleshed out they are, contribute to an overarching narrative about how people manage trauma.įinal Fantasy VI deals with a lot of dark topics for a Super Nintendo game. While the presentation is less bombastic and the storytelling is less fleshed-out than the later entries due to hardware limitations, Final Fantasy VI is incredibly rich thematically, and is more literary than anything else in the series. It feels like a collection of everything that made the previous Nintendo entries great while pointing towards the future of the franchise with its more involved story. Final Fantasy VI was the final entry released on the Super Nintendo in 1994, before the series moved to the PlayStation. While Final Fantasy as a franchise is most widely known for its seventh, tenth and fourteenth entries, all of which are great games, it is the sixth entry that many critics correctly regard as the series’ true masterpiece. There is a new definitive way to play one of the greatest RPGs of all time. Beyond A Steel Sky, the long-awaited sequel to the 1994 original, is an attempt to bridge the gap between those two styles-but unfortunately, it ends up feeling like some of the messier 3D adventure games from 20 years ago rather than another classic like its predecessor.īeyond A Steel Sky brings back Robert Foster, the protagonist of the first game, and picks up 10 years after his escape from Union City and LINC, the half-mechanical, half-organic being that runs it. After the genre struggled to adapt into 3D and was briefly declared dead by pundits, the genre's resurgence occurred on two main fronts-the simplified, story-driven 3D games of Telltale, which focused on choice and consequence over puzzles, and retro-styled 2D games released like Unavowed, Kathy Rain, and Broken Age, which included a lot of the esoteric puzzle-solving the genre used to be known for. In the 26 years since Revolution Software released Beneath A Steel Sky, the adventure game has come full circle. There's even less available for games like Lawbreakers, Radical Heights, TERA Online, EverQuest Online Adventures, MapleStory Adventures, and many more. What was once a thriving MMO based on a hugely popular sci-fi property is now essentially an empty museum piece. You can explore its world, but you can't do quests or engage in combat. Even then, you can't actually play the game. The Matrix Online shut down in 2009, but has been preserved (to an extent) by dedicated players. This frequently happens to online-only games. The developers have stated that it will get a multiplatform release this year but until that happens, a game that came out, that people paid for, and that was entirely single-player, is completely unplayable - at least by legal means. Gylt, the survival horror game which was one of Google Stadia's only exclusives, is currently unavailable in any form. The history of games is riddled with the corpses of titles that required an Internet connection and, because their studios have stopped supporting them, are unplayable today. Though it's unfortunate for individual players, it's worse for games as a medium. Features Editor Ben Sledge recently argued that video games aren't accessible for the working class, and the requirement that players have a good Internet connection for games that don't actually need an Internet connection is another datapoint in favor of his argument.īut that isn't the worst aspect. But, if a game has a campaign that can be completed single-player, there's no excuse for it to require an Internet connection at all times. A few years ago, I reconnected with a college friend living in Thailand by playing Risk of Rain 2 and Left 4 Dead together. That’s just how multiplayer works, and it’s great that it can let you keep up with a friend living across the world. Obviously, there are plenty of games where being online is a necessity. However, midway through the year, fans have yet to receive a definite release window, and it seems as if the project may remain under wraps for the remainder of the year. Development was speculated to be nearing completion in late 2021, and many hypothesized that System Shock would likely debut at some point in 2022. While it’s encouraging to see that the System Shock remake is still in active development, the lack of a concrete release date remains a cause for concern. A forerunner of Portal’s beloved villain GLaDOS, SHODAN is perhaps the most terrifying AI in all of gaming, and her long-awaited return should be a cause for celebration among sci-fi horror fans. The trailer also heavily features SHODAN, the iconic rogue AI who injected much-needed personality into the otherwise sterile Citadel station. RELATED: Starfield Protagonist Won't Be A Voiced Character The original game had a suffocating feel to it with tight environments and an unwieldy UI, and, while Nightdive Studios seems to have done a commendable job of updating the game for the twenty-first century, it also seems to have maintained the oppressive, rat-in-a-maze feel that made the first System Shock title so compelling. Its potential magnum opus, however, is set to be a complete remake of the sci-fi RPG title System Shock, and it recently received a new trailer as part of PCGamer’s 2022 PC Gaming Show.Īn eerie, tense, and claustrophobic experience, the forthcoming System Shock title looks to adhere very closely to the source material. From a modernization of Id’s seminal Quake to a fine-tuning of the relatively obscure Shadow Man in the form of 2021’s Shadow Man Remastered, the indie outfit has done an exemplary job of preserving titles on which many gamers would have missed out had they been left to gather dust. Nightdive Studios have earned a reputation for producing stellar remakes and remasters of semi-niche titles form the 1990s. |
